Visitors who have made the effort invariably say that the highlight of their stay on Lombok was climbing Mount Rinjani. The views from the summit on a clear day are simply breathtaking. The ascent requires three days (although some keen climbers try to do it in two). Be warned that the summit is often wreathed in cloud, and views down to the blue-green lake Segara Anak within the caldera are also often obscured by a layer of cloud that lies trapped in the enormous crater location Plawangan Senaru and Plawangan Sembalun.
Mount Rinjani is the second-highest mountain in Indonesia outside Irian Jaya – rising to an altitude of 3726 m. The volcano is still active but last erupted some time ago – in 1901, although in 1997 rumblings left dust raining for a week. The mountain, and a considerable area of land surrounding the mountain totaling some 400 sq km, has been gazetted as a national park.
